]]> According to multiple sources, including the San Francisco Chronicle, A’s left-hander Brett Anderson underwent Tommy John Surgery (reconstructive elbow surgery) this morning. Dr. James Andrews, who performed the operation, expects Anderson to be out for at least a year.

At 23, Anderson’s career has been limited by various injuries. When healthy, Anderson has the makings of a true ace. Unfortunately, Anderson’s health is seemingly always in question.

The A’s, who currently sit in last place in the American League West, have pitching depth, so losing Anderson for the season isn’t a crippling blow. The A’s have already lost Dallas Braden for the year as well, so it can’t get much worse.  (more…)

]]> With Andrew Bailey back with the team, the A’s have to decide whether or not to have Bailey jump into the closer’s role. The A’s have managed pretty well without Bailey for the first two months, with Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentes closing out games, but Bailey is Oakland’s All-Star closer.

The young two-time AL All-Star closer, according to SF Chronicle writer, Susan Slusser, will likely get his job rather quickly so long as he puts together a few good outings first. The A’s reinstated Bailey, who had been sidelined since March, and sent Bobby Cramer back down to Triple-A Sacramento.

One does have to figure, however, that the A’s bullpen should be in better shape with Bailey back from injury. Slusser also points out that Bailey will probably not pitch in back-to-back games for a while, but the A’s have plenty of options when Bailey is not available.  (more…)

]]> The Oakland A’s, a team that will surely be anchored by its strong starting pitching next season, are on the look out for some impact players on offense. GM Billy Beane and the rest of the A’s front office personnel are having themselves a very busy offseason, as the team has already acquired the likes of OF David DeJesus, and 3B Edwin Encarnacion just to name a few.

The A’s heading into next season have very little punch in their lineup. 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff led the team in homers this year with 16. According to reports, however, the A’s are set to meet with Lance Berkman.

Berkman, 34, is a possibility for Oakland, but he’s publicly said that he has no plans to become just a DH. The switch-hitting Berkman hit .248/.368/.413 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs this season while splitting time between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.
