Eric Chavez is one step closer to rejoining the A’s by their next home-stand. As expected, Chavez was given a rehab assignment that could potentially last all of next week. Chavez will join the Sacramento River Cats (A’s Triple-A team) as part of his week long rehab stint. If he is deemed healthy at the end of his assignment, he’ll rejoin the A’s on their next home-stand. Chavez has been dealing with two bulging disks in his neck, but after taking a break he’s become confident enough to say that he’ll be back this season.

Despite this relatively good news, Chavez has suffered numerous setbacks in the past—that have put an outstanding amount of strain on his broken down body—so fans should not get too overly optimistic about Chavez’s return. In the 33 games he’s played this season, Chavez has managed to hit only .234/.276/.333 with 1 home run and 10 RBIs.

Upon landing on the DL this season, many people (including myself) speculated that Chavez would eventually retire this season. That’s still not totally out of the question as he’s yet to return from the DL, but it looks like he’ll play again for the green-and-gold this season. Obviously I wish the best for him and hope that he can return and help the A’s reach post-season.
