What to do, what to do, in this crazy world? That’s probably the question circulating around Oakland’s front office right about now, whether they admit it or not. After this season, the A’s will have plenty of work to do, as they have several players with options for the 2011 season. Among them are Eric Chavez, Coco Crisp, Mark Ellis and manager Bob Geren.
The A’s are certain to not pick up Chavez’s $12.5 million option for 2011, and are most likely to buy him out at the cost of $3 million. Considering how little Chavez has played in the [...]

Where’s The Relief?
Heading into the season, the Oakland A’s were thought to possess a top bullpen, which was to be led by 2009 AL ROY Andrew Bailey. While the bullpen hasn’t been atrocious, the performances we’ve been seeing lately haven’t been exactly dominant. Michael Wuertz, who went 6-1 with a 2.63 ERA while notching four saves, is not very effective this season.
Wuertz, who has made 14 appearances this season, has a 2-0 record, but has a 6.35 ERA and a WHIP of 1.76. Last season, opposing offenses were hitting a merger .188 against Wuertz. This season, opposing offenses are having no trouble [...]
Since throwing the 19th perfect game in MLB history, A’s starter Dallas Braden, has not looked as sharp as he did on May 9th. Braden, who has been effective for most of this season for Oakland, has been on quite a dry spell since his perfecto. Braden is 0-3 since his perfect game, and has allowed 15 runs over his past 30.1 innings (4.48 ERA). While it’s not entirely Braden’s fault for his current losing streak—the A’s have given Braden only eight runs of support in his last four starts—the A’s starter has not looked as good as he has [...]
Don’t Look Now, But…
The Oakland A’s are having trouble keeping their players healthy for a full-season. In fact, the other day when the A’s were in Anaheim, my uncle quipped that the A’s probably get their players from thrift stores. Naturally, I laughed at the joke. However, upon further thought, I am growing concerned about the A’s frequent injury woes.
I mean if it isn’t Justin Duchscherer, it’s Eric Chavez. And if it’s not them, it’s either Mark Ellis or Coco Crisp that manage to get their name put on the DL. Both Duchscherer and Chavez have been placed on the DL, and both [...]
Oakland A’s manager, Bob Geren, is perhaps the worst manager in American League (maybe even in the MLB). Geren’s latest blunder, which occured in last night’s loss to Seattle, is just another example of how he stinks at being a Major-League manager.
Geren, who has the A’s at 6-3, left in reliever Brad Ziegler in the eight inning despite struggling with his command. As a result, Ziegler gave up a three-run homer to former-Athletic, Milton Bradley. Bradley, who is hitting just .115 this season launched the ball out of the yard. Ziegler’s command was horrific, probably the worst I’ve ever seen, [...]
The A’s will most likely open the season with Ben Sheets on the mound. Sheets would then be followed by Dallas Braden, Justin Duchscherer and Brett Anderson. That’s a pretty solid front-four, but the A’s are still deciding on who will get the final spot in the rotation. Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez are the two contenders vying for the fifth and final spot. While Cahill would probably be the favorite, fans should not overlook Gonzalez’s fantastic spring.
In his latest outing, Gonzalez allowed one run, walked three and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings. As a result, Gonzalez lowered [...]
The A’s in 2010 will have to rely on strong defense and exceptional pitching if they are to crawl out the AL West cellar. Ben Sheets headlines a starting rotation that also includes Justin Duchscherer, Dallas Braden, Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill. However, Justin Duchscherer, a two-time All-Star, has recently been at odds with A’s manager, Bob Geren.
Geren was hired after the A’s fired Ken Macha, who led the team to the ALCS in 2006. Geren, a former big-league catcher, is a personal friend of A’s GM, Billy Beane. Under Geren, the A’s have finished under .500 in each of the last three seasons. He is [...]
Health has always been an issue with the Oakland Athletics. Just ask six-time Gold Glove winner, Eric Chavez. Chavez, who signed a six year, $66 million contract in 2004, has played in only 121 games in the last three years. Forearm tendinitis, and back injuries have plagued Chavez’s career.
Chavez, who is coming off yet another surgery, will try to comeback and serve as the A’s utility player. He is expected to play first-base, shortstop, third and possible the outfield. He is also expected to share some time at DH with Jack Cust.
As a Gold Glove winner, Chavez is expected to [...]
With two spring training games completed, here’s a look back at some of the action that took place on Thursday and Friday:
THURSDAY, MARCH 4 (LOSS, 9-3)
Trevor Cahill: Put in two-innings of work Thursday against the Cubs. Cahill allowed two runs on three hits, and struck out two. A’s manager, Bob Geren, said that he liked what he saw from Cahill.
Justin Souza: Pitched one frame, allowed one hit but also managed to strike out the side in the eighth inning.
Michael Taylor: Went 0 for 1 in his first spring training game for the A’s.
Chris Carter: The highly touted prospect went 1 [...]
