Still awaiting on the word of MLB Comissioner Bud Selig, the Oakalnd Athletics are also seemingly waiting to offer star pitcher Gio Gonzalez a contract extension. Gonzalez, 25, represents one of Oakland’s top young arms, but the team has yet to offer an extension to the young southpaw.

Oakland ironed out contract extensions for pitchers Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill, but Gonzalez hasn’t really been approached by the team about an offer. Last year both Cahill and Gonzalez emerged onto the scene, winning a combined 33 games for Oakland, with Gonzalez pulling out 15 of those victories.

He went 15-9 with a 3.23 ERA in 200.2 innings last season. He struck out a total of 171 batters last year, while walking a total of 92. Despite the high number of walks, Gonzalez produced a solid campaign in 2010, and certainly deserved a little more recognition for his efforts.

This year, Gonzalez has compiled a 15-12 record to go along with a 3.25 ERA in 194.0 innings. Gonzalez is projected to start in Oakland’s final game of the season in Seattle on Wednesday, but the lefty’s 2011 numbers are pretty similar to the ones he posted last year. (more…)

This has gone on long enough, and the A’s are dire need of a new stadium. While a majority of the team’s small fan-base wants to keep the team in Oakland, A’s co-owner, Lew Wolff, has expressed time and time again that the team’s future is not in Oakland. According to the SF Chronicle, and Ball Park Digest, the committee appointed by Baseball’s Commissioner could suggest that the team stay in Oakland.

Wolff, who wants a new stadium, has expressed his interest in moving the team to San Jose, but the territorial rights to that area belong to the San Francisco Giants. The team, according to Wolff, has “exhausted all options in Oakland.” If the committee does deem Oakland a suitable place for a stadium, the A’s ownership could decide to sell the team, which in my opinion, would be the best move for the franchise.

The A’s have made the playoffs only once in Wolff’s tenure as owner, and many fans have expressed their interest in finding a new owner who is committed to winning a championship. However, regardless of the committee’s findings, the team still could find another place to move the franchise. If Wolff does not want to keep the team in Oakland, he should simply sell the team to someone who does.

According to multiple reports, the team expects to hear about the committee’s findings sometime this week…

The team non-tendered DH Jack Cust, OF Travis Buck, and 3B Edwin Encarnacion yesterday according to multiple reports, including the A’s official team site.

With Cust out of the picture, the A’s must feel very confident that they’ll be able to sign free agent Lance Berkman. Berkman is definitely no Adam Dunn, but the team is definitely interested in his services. I’m still a bit skeptical of how much Berkman has left in the tank, and how much he can contribute to the A’s, especially after hitting just .248 this year in 122 games.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the A’s are very serious contenders to land Berkman and are “targeting him enthusiastically,” but have yet to discuss salary with the slugger.

The latest on free agent 3B Adrian Beltre might be a little discouraging for some A’s fans. According to the Boston Globe (also reported by ESPN), the third-baseman is interested in returning to Boston. Beltre, who is represented by agent Scott Boras, had a fantastic season this year hitting .321/.365/.553 with 28 HR and 102 RBIs with the Red Sox.

Beltre was quoted as saying that he “liked the atmosphere” in Boston, and liked the fact that the stadium was packed most nights. The A’s attendance, however, was the second-lowest in baseball this year. Despite reports that the A’s were close to signing Beltre, the slugger may be taking his time before deciding to agree to a contract. (more…)
