At 23, though, these type of arm/shoulder injuries are not an encouraging sight for a young pitcher. Anderson was sidelined twice during the 2010 season due to elbow inflammation, and his 2011 season was cut even shorter due to injuries.

He made 13 starts this year, going 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA over 83.1 innings. Luckily for the A’s, though, the team got extra help this year from Brandon McCarthy and Guillermo Moscoso to help ease the loss of Anderson. … [visit site to read more]

Still awaiting on the word of MLB Comissioner Bud Selig, the Oakalnd Athletics are also seemingly waiting to offer star pitcher Gio Gonzalez a contract extension. Gonzalez, 25, represents one of Oakland’s top young arms, but the team has yet to offer an extension to the young southpaw.

Oakland ironed out contract extensions for pitchers Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill, but Gonzalez hasn’t really been approached by the team about an offer. Last year both Cahill and Gonzalez emerged onto the scene, winning a combined 33 games for Oakland, with Gonzalez pulling out 15 of those victories.

He went 15-9 with a 3.23 ERA in 200.2 innings last season. He struck out a total of 171 batters last year, while walking a total of 92. Despite the high number of walks, Gonzalez produced a solid campaign in 2010, and certainly deserved a little more recognition for his efforts.

This year, Gonzalez has compiled a 15-12 record to go along with a 3.25 ERA in 194.0 innings. Gonzalez is projected to start in Oakland’s final game of the season in Seattle on Wednesday, but the lefty’s 2011 numbers are pretty similar to the ones he posted last year. … [visit site to read more]

As reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, A’s young lefty Brett Anderson left the team to head back to Oakland to get his left-elbow checked out.
A’s fans, it’s definitely time to hit the panic button.

As reported by Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, A’s young lefty Brett Anderson left the team to head back to Oakland to get his left-elbow checked out. Oakland’s already depleted starting rotation is now facing the possibility of losing Anderson, 23, to yet another injury plagued season.

The A’s entered the season with one of the best starting rotations in baseball, but injuries to Dallas Braden, Brandon McCarthy, Rich Harden, and Tyson Ross, have derailed the A’s this season.

Braden is out for the remainder of the season, while McCarthy and Ross will likely miss one more month of action. Harden, who has been sidelined all season with a muscle strain under his right arm, is making his way back, but the team is still taking it slow with the oft-injured flame-thrower.

Oakland skipper Bob Geren hasn’t said much about Anderson’s trip back to Oakland to get his elbow check-out, and that could be an indication that the A’s are not quite sure what’s wrong with Anderson. In 13 starts this season, Anderson has gone 3-6 with a 4.00 ERA. … [visit site to read more]
