A’s Still Chasing Texas

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, News, Prediction/Preview | COMMENTS: None Yet

With less than one month to go before the regular season ends, the Oakland A’s are currently behind the first-place Rangers by 7.0 games. The Rangers (75-62) are 3-7 over their last 10, and are currently on a four-game skid. Meanwhile the A’s are 5-5 over their last 10. The Rangers’ lead in the west is still very comfortable, but the A’s are still hanging around in the division.
The A’s young core of arms is getting better with each passing day, and as a result of their growth, the team owns the league’s 4th best ERA (3.53). Guys like Brett [...]

Road Trip Marks Crucial Stretch For A’s

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The A’s enter Monday tied for second-place in the American League West with the Angels, as both clubs trail the Texas Rangers by 8.0 games. In their last series, the A’s split a four-game set at home against the well-balanced Tampa Bay Rays. In fact, Oakland should have taken three games in the series if it hadn’t been for their shaky bullpen in game three.
All of that, however, is in the past. The A’s will embark on a 10 game road trip starting Tuesday, with stops in Cleveland, Texas and New York. This upcoming road trip is possibly the most [...]

A’s Bailey Aiming For Sunday Return

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Oakland A’s, who enter today’s finale against the Tampa Bay Ray, are hoping to get Andrew Bailey, their young closer, back from the 15-day disabled list today. Bailey, who has pitched exceptionally well this season—he has a 1.56 ERA and 20 Saves this season—made a rehab appearance on Friday with mixed results. Bailey threw 18 pitches on Friday, and faced five batters. Altogether, however, Bailey allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out one. The A’s, however, are just happy to see that Bailey is healthy, or at least getting there. This season has been riddled with [...]

A’s Swept Away, Fall Further Behind Texas

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The A’s were swept away by the Minnesota Twins, despite the fact that Oakland’s starting rotation has been on fire as of late. With the loss on Sunday, the A’s fell to 10.0 games back of the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West. The A’s pitching ranks 5th in the majors with a team ERA of 3.60 (1st in the AL). But despite their strong pitching, the A’s offense has been rather inconsistent as of late; despite having their top-power prospect, Chris Carter, on the big league roster.
Carter, who hit 27 homers with Triple-A Sacramento this season, is [...]

A’s Fighting Injury Bug

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Not to say that the A’s have ever been a healthy team, but this is just getting ridiculous. The A’s recently placed IF Adam Rosales, who was hitting .271/.321/.400 with 7 home runs and 31 RBIs, on the disabled-list. Mostly starting in a utility role this season for Oakland, Rosales had been quite the surprise this year. In fact, I’ve stated that I’d take Rosales over Cliff Pennington, who’s hitting .260/.334/.376 with 2 home runs and 31 RBIs, in the infield. Rosales was acquired via trade with the Reds over the offseason primarily as a utility player to add depth to [...]

A’s Chavez Nearing Retirement?

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Management | COMMENTS: None Yet

While it wouldn’t come as a surprise, Eric Chavez is pondering whether or not he should retire from the game he loves. Chavez, who is the longest-tenured player in Oakland history, is in his last year of the six-year deal he signed back in 2004. The A’s certainly will not pick up the $12.5 million option after this season, especially given Chavez’s recent struggles with injury. Chavez played in 121 games from 2007-2009, and just 33 this season. Primarily a DH this year, Chavez hit a measly .234/.276/.333 with one homer and 10 RBIs. Although, in the month of May, [...]

A’s-Rangers: Important AL West Battle

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Management, Prediction/Preview | COMMENTS: None Yet

Any way you look at it, the A’s have to start playing exceptional baseball if they want to catch the powerful Texas Rangers. The A’s are 11-7 since the All-Star break, and hope to continue their success at home (32-23) when the Rangers come to the Coliseum for a three-game series starting Friday. The A’s, who have seen their pitching staff mature this season, have the league’s 6th best ERA (3.72). The staff, which recently got Brett Anderson and Dallas Braden back from the DL, has seen guys like Trevor Cahill, Gio Gonzalez and Vin Mazzaro mature into solid pitchers. [...]

A’s Notes: Buck, Chavez, Sheets and More!

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

With the A’s trailing the Rangers in the AL West by 8.5 games, the team could use all the help they can get in the second-half. The A’s had Brett Anderson back last night, and despite his sub-par performance, the team should be excited to have their young ace back in the rotation. Dallas Braden, who returned not too long ago himself, gets the start tonight against the White Sox. Braden, who beat the White Sox last week, will look to impress Ozzie Guillen, who called Braden’s last start ‘nothing special.’
In other news, the A’s have recently activated OF Travis [...]

A’s Look To Extend Streak

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: Promotions | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

The A’s are on quite a roll. The A’s, who just finished a sweep against the sluggish Royals, will look to extend their season-high winning streak to six games against the banged up Red Sox.
Ben Sheets, who has been mentioned in trade talks, will look to build upon his last start, where he pitched six-shutout innings against the Angels. The A’s pitching staff has been exceptional for the past week or so, and have one of the top team ERAs in the AL.
The A’s offense, however, has also found success recently. The A’s 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff recorded seven [...]

A’s Finish First-Half On A High Note

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Oakland Athletics may be 7.5 games behind the first-place Texas Rangers, but the team’s morale remains positive. On Sunday, the A’s finished their series against the visiting Angels, with a series winning 5-2 finale. Trevor Cahill, who will be accompanied by Andrew Bailey, won his ninth game of the season to improve to 9-3. Cahill went seven strong innings and lowered his ERA to 2.94. Cahill and Bailey will be the A’s two representatives at the All-Star game, but Bailey will be the one eligible to play.
Heading into the break, the A’s currently sit at 43-46 and hope to [...]
