A’s Notes: A’s Young Staff, Crisp, Pennington & More!

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

At 60-60, the A’s are back up to .500 and are hoping their young rotation will keep things rolling in the right direction for them. In the first game of a four-game set against the surging Tampa Bay Rays, A’s starter (and ace-in-the-making) Trevor Cahill pitched eight solid innings en route to his 13th win of the season. Cahill, who won 10 games last season in his rookie year, has been vastly different this season and has enjoyed a great amount of success. Last season, Cahill surrendered an A’s rookie record, 27 home runs. This season, however, Cahill’s sinker has [...]

Options In Oakland: Chavez, Crisp, Ellis & Geren

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Management, News | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

What to do, what to do, in this crazy world? That’s probably the question circulating around Oakland’s front office right about now, whether they admit it or not. After this season, the A’s will have plenty of work to do, as they have several players with options for the 2011 season. Among them are Eric Chavez, Coco Crisp, Mark Ellis and manager Bob Geren.
The A’s are certain to not pick up Chavez’s $12.5 million option for 2011, and are most likely to buy him out at the cost of $3 million. Considering how little Chavez has played in the [...]

A’s Buck, Jackson Back With Team

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Oakland A’s recalled OF Travis Buck from Triple-A and reinstated OF Connor Jackson from the 15-day disabled list on Monday. To make room for both players, the A’s optioned infielder Jeff Larish and outfielder Chris Carter.
Buck, who came up with the team back in 2007, began this season with the A’s. After hitting .219 with a home run and two RBIs in 11 games, Buck was placed on the disabled-list with a strained right oblique muscle. In 23 games with the River Cats, Buck hit .322 with two home runs and 15 RBIs. As for Jackson, the A’s [...]

A’s Swept Away, Fall Further Behind Texas

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The A’s were swept away by the Minnesota Twins, despite the fact that Oakland’s starting rotation has been on fire as of late. With the loss on Sunday, the A’s fell to 10.0 games back of the first-place Texas Rangers in the American League West. The A’s pitching ranks 5th in the majors with a team ERA of 3.60 (1st in the AL). But despite their strong pitching, the A’s offense has been rather inconsistent as of late; despite having their top-power prospect, Chris Carter, on the big league roster.
Carter, who hit 27 homers with Triple-A Sacramento this season, is [...]

A’s Fighting Injury Bug

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Not to say that the A’s have ever been a healthy team, but this is just getting ridiculous. The A’s recently placed IF Adam Rosales, who was hitting .271/.321/.400 with 7 home runs and 31 RBIs, on the disabled-list. Mostly starting in a utility role this season for Oakland, Rosales had been quite the surprise this year. In fact, I’ve stated that I’d take Rosales over Cliff Pennington, who’s hitting .260/.334/.376 with 2 home runs and 31 RBIs, in the infield. Rosales was acquired via trade with the Reds over the offseason primarily as a utility player to add depth to [...]

A’s Call Up Top Prospect Carter

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

Rejoice, A’s fans. It’s the dawn of a new era, the Chris Carter era. On Monday, the A’s called-up their top prospect 1B/LF Carter, who made his debut against the Mariners in the A’s 1-3 loss. The A’s, who have been in a rebuilding mode for the past couple of seasons now, might finally be on their way to a much brighter future. Entering Monday, the A’s hit just 70 homers as a team (29th in MLB). Carter, who was the A’s top power-threat in the minors, left Triple-A Sacramento with 27 homers and 89 RBIs. Although his debut wasn’t [...]

A’s Notes: Bailey, Cahill, Crisp & More!

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The A’s might have a relatively harmless offense on paper, but that does not mean they’re absolutely horrendous. In Saturday’s game against the first-place Rangers, the A’s rather punchless offense got to former A’s-ace, Rich Harden, and beat the Rangers, 6-2. The A’s are hoping for another win against Texas, as the team tries to pull within 7.5 games of the Rangers. The A’s are also hoping to get closer Andrew Bailey back soon, as he should start to throw today. Getting Bailey back, who has been dealing with a strained rib-cage, would be helpful, but the bullpen has done a [...]

A’s Top Prospects Carter, Taylor Awaiting Call

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Fans, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Oakland A’s are a young team on the rise, and while the young pitching staff is coming together, the offense could use some help. The A’s enter Saturday 9.5 games behind the first-place Rangers. Pitching has not been a problem for Oakland, as the team has the 6th best ERA in the majors (3.70). Offense, however, has been the inconsistent variable this season. On the year, only two A’s players have 10 or more home runs (Kurt Suzuki has 12, Kevin Kouzmanoff has 10). As a team, the A’s rank 29th in the majors with just 69 home runs.

A’s Notes: Buck, Chavez, Sheets and More!

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

With the A’s trailing the Rangers in the AL West by 8.5 games, the team could use all the help they can get in the second-half. The A’s had Brett Anderson back last night, and despite his sub-par performance, the team should be excited to have their young ace back in the rotation. Dallas Braden, who returned not too long ago himself, gets the start tonight against the White Sox. Braden, who beat the White Sox last week, will look to impress Ozzie Guillen, who called Braden’s last start ‘nothing special.’
In other news, the A’s have recently activated OF Travis [...]

A’s Ben Sheets Done For Season

AUTHOR: Joseph Lopez | IN: A's, Management, News | COMMENTS: None Yet

That’s all folks. You know, $10 million doesn’t go as far as it used to. The A’s announced on Wednesday that pitcher Ben Sheets, Billy Beane’s $10 million investment, is going to miss the rest of the 2010 season. Sheets, who signed a one-year deal in January, went 4-9 with a 4.53 ERA in 20 starts with Oakland. Despite his efforts, Sheets was unable to maintain any kind of momentum, and was relatively mediocre for the season. While he had shown some signs of improvement (2.25 ERA in July), Sheets did not impress many scouts as trade rumors swirled around [...]
