Oakland Athletics Recap 4/25/2016: A’s Lose Vs. Tigers 7-3

7. 63. 3. 96. Final

On a chilly night in Detroit’s Comerica Park, the Oakland Athletics lose one to the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7-3. Miguel Cabrera supplied all the offense the Tigers would need as he goes 4-for-4 with two big home runs and four RBI. Jordan Zimmerman, who prior to this evening had not allowed a single run, allowed just one earned run and three total. Victor Martinez also netted a home run immediately following Cabrera’s second homer.

The ball carried well despite the cold weather that evening as the Tigers provided twelve hits. The A’s did the best they could as well, scoring ten hits of their own, but they could not muster the fortitude necessary to bring runners home. Eighteen runners on base were stranded, and the A’s go 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The A’s were able to capitalize on an error as Marcus Semien was able to advance on a fielding error by Justin Upton and scored immediately thereafter. But the A’s simply couldn’t figure an answer for Zimmerman’s precision, and they scored only three runs. Kendall Graveman allowed the bulk of the damage, getting knocked around by Cabrera and Martinez for three home runs total and letting six runs score.

Bright spots included the major league debut of Andrew Triggs, who faced three batters and put them all away. Though the A’s may not have a starter penciled in to replace Eric Surkamp in four days, Triggs can certainly bolster the bullpen until David Forst and Bob Melvin make a decision between Sean Manaea, Jesse Hahn, or anyone else. Additionally, the A’s had scored hits in every lineup position with the exception of Chris Coghlan, who was replaced by Mark Canha who went 1-for-2, and Coco Crisp, who still reached base on an error by Zimmerman and scored. Even Billy Butler, pinch hitting in the ninth inning, was able to slash a double on the first pitch he saw.

The A’s look very well even after a poor detour in Toronto.

Their bullpen today did not allow a single earned run, though

Liam Hendriks

did let

Mike Aviles

score (he reached third base on a passed ball by

Stephen Vogt

). It is simply a difficult task to hit against a crafty guy like Jordan Zimmerman. A’s fans ought to have faith: in the next three matchups vs. the Tigers, the A’s starting pitchers have better ERAs pitcher-by-pitcher than do the Tigers. For reference:

Tuesday’s matchup:

Rich Hill (2-2, 3.32 ERA) vs. Mike Pelfrey (0-3, 3.68)

Wednesday:

Sonny Gray (3-1, 2.73) vs. Justin Verlander (1-2, 5.79)

Thursday:

Chris Bassitt (0-1, 4.44) vs. Anibal Sanchez (2-2, 7.00)

In short, the A’s have a good chance of still taking this series if their bullpen can hold.

Of course, they need to figure out how to get Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez out…

Next: It's Time To Call Up Starter Sean Manaea

Tomorrow, the Athletics face off again opposite the Tigers. Rich Hill and Mike Pelfrey will duel in Comerica Park at 4:05 PM PST.
