A’s Make Roster Moves; No Decision on Jarrod Parker Yet
Oakland Athletics Roundup: Monday, March 14

On Sunday, the Oakland Athletics made a flurry of roster moves both before and after their tie game against the Chicago Cubs, placing Jarrod Parker on the 60-day disabled list and sending a group of non-roster invitees to the minor league side of camp. Samantha Riley covered the moves in more depth here, but there are a few things to note:

  • Some of these players will appear with the Athletics again before the end of Spring Training. Even once a player is optioned, they may still be called back over to the big league side of camp to fill in as roster depth. The point of re-assigning the players to the minor league squad at this point in Spring Training is simply to make sure everyone has adequate playing time. The Athletics’ major league players are staying in games longer as camp progresses, and it will only become more difficult to find work for all of the younger prospects as it gets closer to the season.

  • Perhaps the most notable cut was Renato Nunez, one of the Athletics’ top infield prospects. Nunez was 3-for-15 in 18 plate appearances, with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. Overall, it wasn’t a very impressive showing for the 22-year-old, but he will have plenty of time to prove himself to the A’s front office in Triple-A Nashville.
  • Two other names on the major league cut list included right-hander Raul Alcantara and reliever Daniel Coulombe. Coulombe, who made nine appearances and posted a 3.52 ERA for the Athletics last season after being picked up from the Los Angeles Dodgers, was roughed up in his 3.1 innings of Spring Training work. Over four games, he allowed five hits, four walks and a hit batsman, giving up eight runs, six of which were earned. Alcantara performed slightly better, allowing two runs in two appearances. He gave up five hits and a pair of walks, including a home run, over five total innings.
