First Full Week of Cactus League Games Begins; Ryan Dull’s Escape Act
Oakland Athletics Roundup: Monday, March 7
The Athletics took home a victory on Sunday, defeating the San Diego Padres in a 6-5 win at Peoria. The scoring started off with a two-run home run to center field in the fourth inning, courtesy of outfielder Andrew Lambo.

Lambo is in camp with the A’s for the first time, hoping to win a job on the major league roster. He previously struggled to earn a spot with the Pittsburgh Pirates, spending the majority of his time with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. He had two hits on Sunday.
Chris Bassitt walked one and struck out a batter in his two scoreless innings of work, but it was Ryan Dull who had perhaps the most interesting performance. Former A’s catcher Derek Norris reached on an error, when Chris Coghlan and Joey Wendle miscommunicated in right field, and Dull walked the next better. Then, Manuel Margot laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, but he reached base thanks to a throwing error by Renato Nunez. Wendle’s defense saved a run there, as he backed up the first baseman and prevented anyone from scoring on the error.
With the bases loaded, Dull took matters into his own hands. He struck out Christian Bethancourt and Adam Rosales, and got Jon Jay to fly out to center field to end the inning with a scoreless outing. Dull didn’t panic in a tough situation, despite his rookie status – a positive takeway from the day. He will be a player to keep an eye on heading into the season.
Another player to watch is shortstop Franklin Barreto, who had his second home run of Spring Training on Sunday. The A’s top prospect continues to impress with his offense.
One last note: Billy Burns had a pair of hits and a walk in three plate appearances, although he got thrown out trying to steal second base in the first inning.
