Oakland Athletics Roundup: Can A’s DFA’ed Players Clear Waivers?; Jose Torres

Oakland Athletics Roundup: Monday, November 23

On Friday, the Oakland Athletics designated three players for assignment: A.J. Griffin, Fernando Abad and Craig Gentry. Is it possible that all three will clear waivers and be available to be outrighted or re-signed to minor league deals?

In the case of Gentry, it doesn’t matter as much. Gentry’s main qualities are speed and defense, and with the success of Billy Burns, it really eliminated the role Gentry played with the A’s. But in the case of the pitchers, it’s impossible to have too much pitching depth, and Abad and Griffin would be nice to stash in the minors.

Abad finished the year with a 4.15 ERA in 47.2 innings, but he was actually very good in the middle of the season. Rough patched on either end of the year did him in, but his numbers in June and July are reason to believe he can turn it around – which would be very beneficial to the Athletics if they’re able to keep him in Triple-A rather than losing him entirely.

Griffin was perhaps the most surprising DFA choice, given that there were others – Sam Fuld and Evan Scribner – with much lower ceilings. The Athletics, however, decided not to put their trust in a comeback from Griffin. He would be another good candidate to stash at Nashville, if there’s any hope that he’ll recover from his injuries fully.
