Oakland Athletics Roundup: Saturday, November 21

Friday was a big day for the Oakland Athletics, as they made several roster moves in a flurry of activity. First, the A’s handled the deadline for protecting players from the Rule 5 Draft by adding minor league infielder Joey Wendle and left-handed pitcher Jose Torres to the 40-man roster. Then, they added free agent acquisition Rich Hill to the roster as well.

This meant that three players – Fernando Abad, Craig Gentry, and A.J. Griffin – were all designated for assignment. None of these were shocking moves, although Griffin was a bit of a surprise – if he can come back healthy, he has the talent to pitch. However, the A’s ran out of time to wait for him to return from his injuries. It’s also possible that Griffin will clear waivers and can be stashed in the minor leagues for another season, given his injury track record.

Later on Friday, the Athletics made a even trade, exchanging starter Jesse Chavez for setup man Liam Hendriks of the Blue Jays. This trade improves the A’s bullpen, while dealing from an area of strength: back-end-of-the-rotation starters. It also gives the A’s four years of control, as compared to Chavez’s one remaining year.
