According to Susan Slusser, Dan Otero has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento to make room for Craig Gentry or Kyle Blanks, who are ready to come off of the DL.
It is safe to assume that this move was made for two reasons. The first reason is that Dan Otero had an option remaining, and could be sent down without being lost to the Athletics. As I stated this morning in September Call-Ups: 5 Players You Can Expect to See in Oakland, if Gentry was to be brought up before September, the player sent down will be expected back on September 1st.

Why Dan Otero and not, say, Sam Fuld? Fuld is out of options. This move will be temporary.
The second reason the A’s added Gentry is because of another statement from this morning’s piece: Gentry is hitting .407 against the Angels this year. With a series against the Halos this weekend, the A’s could definitely use Gentry, both offensively, and to give Coco Crisp a day out of the field.
If Kyle Blanks is the one to be called up, then when Gentry is ready, we can expect Nate Freiman to be optioned, and be brought back up when rosters expand. Either way, we will be seeing both Gentry and Blanks in Oakland very soon.
With Dan Otero in Sacramento, there is a chance that the struggling Jason Hammel will be available out of the bullpen for a short time.
