The MLB Draft is underway, and the A’s pick is in. With their 25th overall pick, the Oakland Athletics selected Matt Chapman, 3B/P, out of Cal State Fullerton. Here is the draft video that MLB.com had on him before the draft. It’s unknown which of these positions the Athletics will want him to pursue in the coming years.
The 6’1″ Chapman is a hard thrower, reaching 99 mph with the USA Collegiate National Team, and has lots of raw power at the plate. His athleticism and strong build lend him to playing in the field on a consistent basis.
With this, my assumption is that he will be tutored with the bat to build up that power, and see how he progresses down that road. If it doesn’t work to the organization’s liking, then he can go back to blowing people away with his 99 mph fastball.
The decision as to which position he plays may also be up to Renato Nunez and his performance. Nunez is currently playing in Stockton and mans third base for the Ports. One of these two players may be the replacement for Josh Donaldson down the road when he becomes too expensive for the Athletics.
