The fans have been clamoring for Vogt to return to Oakland since he was left off of the Opening Day roster back in March. He missed about a month for the River Cats with an oblique injury.
On the season, Vogt is hitting .364 with 3 HR and 19 RBI in 88 ABs. The move gives the A’s 3 catchers with Vogt joining John Jaso and Derek Norris behind the dish. This will allow Norris and Jaso to rest while Vogt takes over catching duties. The move also allows either Jaso or Norris to DH while Vogt catches. With them slotted at DH, it forces Alberto Callaspo to play the field more for his playing time. After Nick Punto’s struggles defensively last night, and Eric Sogard‘s struggles at the dish this season, Callaspo may wind up playing more second base.
With the loss of Rodriguez from the bullpen, the A’s lose an extra arm for the time being. Reinforcements are expected this month with Ryan Cook and Eric O’Flaherty set to return from injury. Before these two return, it may be put up or shut up time for Jim Johnson. He will be used more without the extra arm to keep him out of key situations.
