Sonny Gray has really performed like a true ace this season for the Oakland Athletics. He owns a 2.31 ERA, excellent for someone who only had 10 Major League Starts under his belt coming into the season.
Sonny Gray is looking to bounce back from his previous start, where he allowed four runs to the Detroit Tigers. It was his first non-quality start of the season after having 10 straight quality starts to kick the season off. He will take the mound against Jered Weaver.
It will prove to be a true pitchers duel, and should be an exciting game to watch.
Brandon Moss will most likely remain out of the lineup Sunday, a safety precaution by Melvin to make sure Moss will be able to play to his best against the Yankees on their road trip.
Mike Trout was out with back stiffness on Saturday, and it is unknown for sure whether or not he will be in the lineup Sunday.
If both remain out of the lineup, it only gives the game even more of an interesting dynamic. Two ace quality pitchers on the mound with both teams missing a huge piece of their lineup? Now that’s a game to watch.
Another thing to look for in the series finale is whether Yoenis Cespedes will be able to carry over his success from Saturday night into Sunday’s day game. He was explosive, and having him heat up only makes this team even more of a threat.
Overall, this game should attract a good crowd, it’s got great pitching and great lineups to face the great pitching. With a sweep of the Angels the Athletics could get some good momentum back, and have good vibes going around for their road trip starting with New York on Tuesday. Hopefully this time, the off day doesn’t kill their momentum.
