It was announced yesterday that the Oakland Athletics Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats are considering switching affiliations. Who would they consider changing to? The San Francisco Giants, of course. It has been a hot topic of discussion the past 24 hours, and our coverage of this announcement was done by Sean Davis here.
There are some out there that believe that this is just a business ploy being used by the River Cats to get a better deal from the Athletics when their contract is up at the end of the season. The River Cats attendance average is the second-highest in the PCL, and nearly 1,300 higher per game than the Giants’ affiliate in Fresno.
Since 2003, the River Cats have won 4 PCL Championships, and were the runner-up once. In that span, the Fresno Grizzlies have 0 appearances in the Championship Series. The A’s farm team is always in contention, and a team that is in contention is a bigger draw, especially in the minors.
It’s true that the San Francisco Giants have won the World Series twice in recent memory, and that is undoubtedly why the River Cats are seemingly looking for a change. The Athletics have a hard time filling their ballpark, but quite honestly, that doesn’t affect the River Cats. The River Cats are doing just fine by minor league standards.
