The Oakland Athletics lost a disappointing game on opening night, and they must be itching for redemption. Unfortunately today’s game has been postponed and redemption will have to wait until tomorrow, when they will play a double header instead of just the one game.
Yesterday’s game was nearly cancelled, but the Athletics got lucky and it got sunny in time for Sonny to shine on a mostly gray day. Now instead it will be a day and night double header for the Athletics and Indians.
The Athletics have a platoon system, so a lot of guys can be rested and can be interchanged to make sure no one gets to tired in the games.
There is also the rule that both teams can call up an extra player from the minors so that they can ease the workload on the pitchers. Tomorrow Kazmir is set to pitch the first game, while Chavez is being bumped to Thursday. That means the Athletics will be dipping into the Rivercats roster to pitch the 2nd game tomorrow at 6 p.m.
A fun fact, this is the first ever day and night double header in the history of the O.co Coliseum. It will be interesting to see how this team reacts to a double header.
Another fun fact, last time the Athletics had a game rained out at home was in 1998. So this doesn’t happen to often.
Overall I think the team will be able to get the first win tomorrow in the first game, but the second game tomorrow is going to rely on the offense, since they won’t have a regular rotation guy pitching.
Suddenly it’s looking like the Brett Anderson trade wasn’t such a good move after all. Either way, the Athletics are off to a very unfortunate start to the season, luckily it has just begun and there is time to turn things around. But they better do it quickly before they dig themselves into a hole.
