Melvin Rests Regular Players as A's Lose to Brewers 7-2

The lineup for the Oakland Athletics against the Milwaukee Brewers today didn’t feature many of their regular players that usually play. The only guys that played on a regular basis with the team last year don’t have their spots locked up on the roster for the 2014 season. The lineup was as follows:

1. Billy Burns, Center Field

2. Eric Sogard, 2nd Base

3. Daric Barton, 1st Base

4. John Jaso, DH

5. Michael Taylor, Right Field

6. Stephen Vogt, Catcher

7. Addison Russel, Shortstop

8. Shane Peterson, Left Field

9. Jake Elmore, 3rd Base

It seems as if Bob Melvin simply wanted to give his regular players a break and not wear them out too much before the season starts. The only guys that played regularly are Sogard, Jaso, and Vogt. Sogard may lose his spot to Punto and/or Callaspo. The A’s may take 3 catchers on the roster, but most likely it’ll be a platoon, and Norris has one of those spots locked up.

That was a smart move on Melvin’s part. While it may lead to losing sometimes, a loss in the Cactus League doesn’t hold much weight. If taking a loss from not playing your main players means they last longer when the season comes around, then I say do it. That’s what Melvin did today, resulting in a 7-2 loss to the Brewers.
