Sam Fuld was an offseason acquisition that wasn’t expected to make the big league roster. But every year the A’s have a guy who goes to Arizona a minor leaguer and leaves with a spot on the 25 man roster. Fuld might just be that player this season.
Gentry was unfortunately out for 10 days, a time period that we are currently in the middle of. He had a strained back and won’t see action for another game or two. When I saw the news I thought this was going to be a hit to the team, but Billy Beane made sure that wouldn’t be an issue. He got an insurance guy for the insurance guy. And he is shining like a star.
Fuld is the only player to have started in all three games and has performed well. On the defensive side he is quick in the outfield and has already made some spectacular, Coco Crisp like plays. He made an amazing over the shoulder catch in his debut against the giants that saved the team extra bases and potentially some runs. He has a great arm that he uses to get the ball back in quickly, and he is overall an outstanding defensive player.
Sam Fuld has also has made some magic happen with his bat. He has gotten the 3 hits in 7 at bats scoring all 3 times due to quick and speedy base running. He even has stolen bases. He is one of the main reasons that the A’s were able to beat the Giants in that first game, and contributed to today’s win as well.
This just proves even further that we should believe in the moves Billy Beane makes and that we shouldn’t underestimate anybody that he brings in. He got Gentry for the team to fill in when needed and maybe even platoon with Reddick, but just in case Gentry didn’t work he brought Fuld aboard and it is already paying off for the A’s. The point of all this is a simple one, get ready to see Sam Fuld in an A’s jersey during the 2014 season.
