LHP Joe Savery Claimed off Waivers by A’s

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Keeping with the offseason mantra of “Sign all the relief pitchers available” this afternoon, the A’s claimed LHP Joe Savery off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies. To make room for Savery, the A’s moved O’Flaherty to the 60-day DL, keeping him on track for a late-May return.

It is assumed that Savery will battle for a bullpen spot out of Spring Training. Oddly, he has been much better against right-handed batters in his career, but has a higher K/BB ratio against lefties. Righties hit just .212 while lefties bat .286. His K/BB ratio against lefties however is 4.5 while against righties is 1.35. This makes him both versatile and volatile.

With or without Savery on the Opening Day roster, the A’s will have a very formidable bullpen.
