Sharp-eyed A’s fans should have noticed in a recently distributed team photo on the making of the upcoming promotional commercials featuring Sean Doolittle that there’s a distinctive green Coco Crisp number ‘4’ jersey featuring white lettering and numbering with piping hanging in the background.
This new green jersey appears to replace the old one (debuted in 1994) and has the same layout as the much adored yellow alternate jersey that was released before the 2012 season. Both the yellow and green jerseys the Athletics will wear both emulate the A’s rich heritage with a similar design from the 70s when the bright multi-colored jerseys were introduced in 1972 – coincidentally the same year the A’s started a three-year consecutive world championship run.
Additionally, it appears the former A’s road cap – all green with the gold ‘A’s’ on the front – has been replaced with a newer version featuring a white A’s emblem outlined in gold. This A’s logo design in very similar to the short-lived alternate black cap the team had in 2008 and 2009.
The A’s have a rich uniform history with multi-colored jerseys and are the only major league team with green in its color scheme. Last year the A’s wore the green alternate jersey in half of their games since it could be worn both at home and on the road. During the 2013 playoffs the team wore the green jersey for road games and the gold jersey at home.
The traditional white and road grey uniforms remain unchanged for this year, however with this year’s green alternate jersey going to the logo from the team script on the front, one has to wonder if the white jersey is not far behind in the change. If so, the team should continue to honor tradition and make it their Sunday home jersey like the glory years of the 70s.
