Today marks the beginning of MLB’s Winter Meetings, this year taking place in Orlando. Commonly this is the time of the offseason when a massive flurry of activity takes place. This year is a little different though, as last week was an extremely active week. For the Oakland Athletics, this week will likely revolve around the talks about Brett Anderson.
At this point, it appears as if nothing is imminent, but the chances remain high that Anderson will be moved. Early reports from the meetings indicate that a number of teams are viewing Anderson as a “plan B” option according to Joel Sherman. A perception like that is likely to remain in place until someone like David Price or Jeff Samardzija is moved, then Anderson’s market could really pick up if he’s the best remaining option.
We are likely to hear about more teams calling the A’s about Yoenis Cespedes as well in the coming days, as discussions will pick up with general managers all within close proximity of one another. A trade of Cespedes would come as a major shock, and would only happen in the event another team overwhelmed the A’s with an offer. But with the A’s, truly anything is possible.
