Athletics Get In the Spirit of Giving

Today it was reported by Susan Slusser that that Athletics were awarded 51 playoff shares each worth $34,325.16.  Typically it is up to the players themselves as to exactly how the shared are divided and who outside the roster will receive a share.  Consistent with the strong character of this team, Jonny Gomes, who is heading to the Boston Red Sox on a 2 year $10 million deal, suggested the A’s vote a playoff share that would be donated to a charitable cause.

To anyone who followed this team throughout the season on a day to day basis, this should not come as a surprise.  One of the essential reasons this team had as much success as it did was because of the character the team possessed.  Jonny Gomes of course was at them helm of this team, and provided a strong leadership quality to the team.  Since he has departed for Beantown, someone else will have to step up and assume that role.  Perhaps someone like Josh Reddick, who was taken under Gomes’ wing will step up.  He certainly has the charisma to do so.

It may not be an earth shattering amount, but $34,325.16 (Cannot neglect the 16 cents) can certainly help out.  What resonates more is the simple gesture being made by the players, who unanimously voted for the donation.  These guys are all making tons of money, even the league minimum guys are making over $400,000 which is more than enough to live a pretty sweet life.  The fact that this team took a moment to think about someone less fortunate than themselves shows a ton of class.  It makes me love the Athletics even more.
