Dave,
I once again agree with you on several levels. If the A's fail to land Iwakuma, they should pursue a big impact hitter instead. Remember, Kouzmanoff and Encarnacion are non-tender candidates, and the deadline is approaching. Ideally, the A's would want an answer from Beltre's agent, Scott Boras, about the five-year, $64 million offer. That in itself is a HUGE commitment on for the small-market A's.
I'm not sure, however, if the A's would give up Barton, Cardenas and Sweeney for Adrian Gonzalez, the Padres 1B. It seems like a bit much. Barton proved that he can play solid defense and wasn't too bad at the plate either. The A's need a guy like Beltre, and from what I'm hearing, the team could also go after Lance Berkman or Adam Dunn.

Thanks again for the read and comment,

Here is my thought. The A's don't need to spend a ton of money on a unproven 5th starter type in Hisashi Iwakuma.
They have plenty of options. Number one being Outman. He was the A's best pitcher before he got hurt. Take the money we would have used on Hisashi and throw it at Beltre. This guy is a phenominal defensive third basemen. He is just as good as Chavez used to be with a much stronger arm. This solves a major hole in the lineup, improves our defence, power and also sends a big notice to any other free agents that it's not a bad idea to come to oakland because they are serious about wining now and in the future. With devine coming back I'd package a wurtz, Barton, Cardenas and Sweeny to SD for their first baseman.
If you get Beltre, Berkman and Gozales the A's will win and the fans will be back. It then gives you momentum for when the team heads to San Jose.
