Cust K'd in Oakland: Slugger dropped from Roster

You're Outta here, Cust! A's drop Cust from Roster

In a shocking move by the A’s, OF/DH, Jack Cust was dropped from the roster. The A’s will make Eric Chavez the full-time DH, since he’s proven to be healthy all spring.

Chavez, who went 2-for-2 in today’s game against the Giants, hit .234/.265/.404 this spring with 2 HR and 5 RBIs. Cust, however, struggled this spring, hitting just .216 with 20 K’s in 19 games.

Shockingly, the A’s believe that Eric Chavez can handle the DH and that Daric Barton will finally prove worthy of starting at first-base. They don’t, however, seem to have much faith in Cust anymore. Cust, who has led the A’s in homers over the past three seasons, will most likely clear waivers and see time in the minors.

Chavez’s health has been a key question all spring, but from what I’ve seen, he’s been able stay healthy. A healthy Chavez could do wonders for the A’s offense this season, especially if he’s the primary DH. Keeping Chavez at the DH spot limits the stress on his surgically repaired shoulder, and as a result could prolong the slugger’s career.

Barton, who hasn’t lived up to all the hype surrounded by him after the Mulder-trade, will look to contribute on a much large scale this season. He had a fantastic spring, hitting .264/.493/.449 with 1 HR, 7 RBIs and an impressive 22 walks in 21 games. All indications point towards Barton having a pretty solid season.

I’m still shocked, but I’m looking forward to seeing Chavvy stepping up to the batter’s box on a daily basis.
