In 2009, the Oakland Athletics attracted a mere 1,408,783 fans to the Oakland- Alameda County Coliseum. With a 75-87 record, fans across the bay area had a hard time finding reasons to attend an A’s game.
However, the A’s in ‘09 did go 40-41 at home (.494WPCT) and outscored opponents, 402 to 348. However, their road woes hampered thier 2009 season. The A’s went 35-46 (.432WPCT) and were outscored, 357 to 413 on the road.
Prior to the start of the 2009 season, many fans had high expectations, since the A’s added sluggers Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi and veteran leaders Orlando Caberera and Nomar Garciaparra to [...]

A’s Future isn’t in Oakland
A’s Preview: Eric Chavez
Coming off yet another injury plagued season, Eric Chavez, a six-time gold glove winner, knows that 2010 may be his last shot at resurrecting what could have been a Hall of Fame career.
From 2000 to 2006, Chavez hit .273/.353/.495 and averaged 28 HR and 94 RBI per season. During that time frame, Chavez won six-consecutive gold gloves and proved to be one of the best players in the league.
However, since 2007, Chavez has appeared in only 121 games. In contrast to his numbers while healthy (.273/.353/.495) Chavez since 2007 has only been able to muster a .196/.243/.324 line.
After undergoing another [...]
Although Spring isn’t officially here yet, the Oakland A’s are beaming with confidence and hope. The 2010 A’s should be a more improved club than the ‘09 squad that managed to hit .262/.328/.397 and scored 759 runs.
The offseason moves, made by GM Billy Beane, add depth to the infield as well as improve the club defensively. The A’s strengths should be their starting rotation, bullpen and overall defense. The A’s only worry is their offense. There’s a distinct lack of power in the lineup, meaning the A’s will have to rely on their speed and baserunning abilities if they have [...]
A’s Preview: Ben Sheets
Seldom do the Oakland A’s dish out major bucks to free agent, let alone a pitcher—but this offseason Billy Beane and the A’s front office lived life on the so-called “edge” and signed SP Ben Sheets.
All it took to bring Sheets to Oakland was a one year, $10 million deal plus incentives. The deal was a bit of a shock, considering it was Oakland that Ben Sheets decided to sign with. Nevertheless, the A’s are taking a risk signing Sheets, 31, who failed to pitch in the 2009 season.
The A’s are surely hoping that Sheets will return to his Milwaukee [...]
With Spring Training quickly approaching, here’s my one bold prediction for the Oakland Athletics in 2010: Brett Anderson, and Trevor Cahill will combine to win at 25 games in 2010.
In 2009 the Oakland A’s featured a very young, talented but inexperienced pitching staff. Of the five starters, both Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill were considered potential front of the rotation starters.
And while both starters experienced their share of struggles, they did make strides in becoming better pitchers in the second-half of 2009.
Brett Anderson, 22, went 11-11 with a 4.06 ERA in 175.1 innings.
And while those numbers are pretty solid for a rookie, [...]
A’s Preview: Trevor Cahill
Trevor Cahill A\’s Highlight
In the early 2000’s, the Oakland A’s had a rotation that featured the “Big Three”, Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito. Those three starters were responsible in making Oakland a perennial playoff contender for the early part of that decade. But once the “Big Three” was completely dismantled by A’s GM, Billy Beane, Oakland experienced a playoff mini-drought.
The A’s last trip to the playoffs was in 2006, where Barry Zito led a trio-less staff. The A’s swept the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS and advanced to the ALCS only to get swept by the Detroit Tigers. [...]
A’s Preview: Mark Ellis
The 2010 A’s infield will look a little different than past years. That’s partly because A’s GM, Billy Beane is trying to retool and rebuild the infield for future seasons.
So excuse me when I say that Mark Ellis is probably the only infielder I know a great deal about (aside from 1B Daric Barton) that will make up Oakland’s starting infield in 2010.
In 2009, Mark Ellis batted .263/.305/.403 en route to a 10-homer, 61 RBI season. Those are pretty solid numbers considering he played in only 105 games. In the last three seasons with the A’s, Ellis’ average line is [...]
With Spring Training just a couple days away, fans in Oakland are left wondering whether or not the A’s offense will be effective enough to compete with the rest of the AL West in 2010.
In 2009 Oakland hit as a team .262/.328/.397 and scored 759 runs (9th in AL). And despite ranking 14th in the AL in OPS (.726) Oakland did manage to find one bright spot offensively–stolen bases. They swiped 133 total bases which was good for 4th most in the AL.
Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t help the A’s pitching staff, who compiled a team ERA of 4.26 (3rd Best [...]
When the A’s started rebuilding after the 2007 season, they knew starting pitching would be an element for success. The A’s traded away Dan Haren to Arizona in exchange for group of talented young prospects. One of those prospects ended up being 2009 AL ROY Candidate, Brett Anderson.
The A’s used Anderson as a starter in their young rotation last season. The results at first weren’t exactly great. Anderson’s ERA in four April starts was 5.01. It later ballooned to 6.38 for five May starts. And for five starts in June his ERA was 5.00.
However, as the season progressed, Anderson seemed [...]
With the 2010 season just months away, the Oakland A’s are heading into Spring Training with a new look infield as well as an improved starting rotation.
Oakland A’s GM, Billy Beane addressed several areas of need this offseason by adding 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff (.255/.302/.420, 15 HR, 88 RBI), CF Coco Crisp and IF Jake Fox (.259/.311/.468, 11 HR, 44 RBI). With Kouzmanoff the A’s addressed their need for an everyday third-baseman with potential to hit for some power.
Aside from the offensive production each player should bring for the A’s, their defense will be most critical. The A’s seemed to shift [...]
